Things to Do in Goondiwindi

Gunsynd Goondiwindi Grey near Jolly Swagman Motor Inn The name Goondiwindi (pronounced "Gundiwindi") is said to come from a local Aboriginal word meaning "the resting place of the birds". The area was explored by Allan Cunningham in 1827 and was settled a decade later. Today this important agricultural area produces wheat, beef cattle, wool, cotton and other specialty crops.

Goondiwindi retains the charm of a traditional country town with tree-lined streets and lovely gardens, yet it is a modern and vibrant place to visit. Set along the banks of the Macintyre River lined with majestic red river gums, you'll find plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment available.

Sightseeing starts with the statue of Goondiwindi's famous race horse, Gunsynd, the Goondiwindi Grey. 

The Goondiwindi Botanic Garden of the Western Woodlands offers families a place to relax and explore the native flora, fauna and bird life of this area. The 25 acre reserve on the western outskirts of town has a playground,  barbeque facilities and a five hectare lake for swimming and canoeing.

The Goondiwindi Golf Course has 18 holes, grass greens and irrigated fairways. Or try sweetwater fishing for Murray Cod and Yellow Belly in the town reaches of the Macintyre River.

Goondiwindi Customs House near Jolly Swagman Motor InnLocal heritage sites include the Customs House Museum and Martha's Cottage from 1850 when Goondiwindi was an important border crossing between Queensland and New South Wales.

The Macintyre Ginnery offers a fascinating view into cotton processing during the picking season from April to September.

The surrounding area is interesting to explore with the historic Kurrumbul Homestead and Nindigully Pub within a short drive. The Aboriginal Rock Wells at Weengallonare well worth a visit. The fishing is good at Glenlyon Dam and the MacIntyre Falls and caves just east of Yetman are not far away.
